Notes for David Hurst SHOCK
David Hurst Shock, son of John Shock and Mary "Polly" Shely, was born March 8, 1800. On August 7, 1823 he married Cynthia Gibson in Missouri. David and Cynthia settled on land about 5 miles north of his father's farm, in an area that is now called Prathersville.

David and Cynthia raised 13 children.

David was a successful farmer, blacksmith, and mill operator and well thought of in the community. In 1839 David and two of his brothers were named among the 869 original donors, "The Founding Families", which helped secure the finances to build the University of Missouri in Columbia. David was a Deacon and a long time member of the Rocky Fork Primitive Baptist Church at Hinton, which was organized June 1821.

I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
