Notes for Nancy Gale (Spouse 1)
Nancy Gale White was born in Kentucky in 1802. Not much is known about her early life but she married Reason Sheley on July 25, 1820 and they farmed in Kentucky until 1833. That year Reason and his family moved to Callaway County, Missouri and began homesteading near Cedar Township in Callaway County. The bought land under the homestead acts prevalent during the nations westward expansion. Their efforts were successful and they owned several hundred acres of Missouri farmland when Reason died. Nancy and Reason had seven children together, two of which died in their teens. Her husband died in 1868. During the last years of her life she lived with her daughter, Catherine Grace Sheley Hawkins, in the home of her grandaughter, Judith Frances "Judy" Hawkins. Nancy followed Reason in death in 1885. “I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
