Rev James Marion "Pap" White was a Union veteran of the Civil War. The 11th Census of the U.S. Vets of the C.W. & widows 1890 Texas Co., Mo. Roll # 123., shows that he was a private in Co. F 101 Illinois Infantry from July 1862 to July 1865.

In 1869 he moved his family to near Elk Creek, Texas Co., Mo. ; where he was a farmer and a well known circuit rider in the Christian Church. His wife's brother; Joseph White and family also went to Texas Co., Mo. before 1870; but
went on to Orange Co., California.

OBIT. -- JAMES WHITE PASSES ON --- OLDTIME RESIDENT DIES AT THE AGE OF 88
YEARS, WAS MINISTER --- James White, who had lived in this vicinity for the greater part of his life, died at the age of 88 years on Monday at the home of his grandson, Hayden White, of the Sargent community. Mr. White was well-known to all the old residents of this community, as in his younger days he was very active in church work, being a minister in the Christian church and having spent many years of his life preaching in the rural churches of this vicinity. He was also a veteran of the Civil War having been a confederate soldier. Four children survive him; two sons and two daughters, in addition to many grandchildren and great-grand-children. The surviving children are; Charles and James White and Mrs. Lizzie Brewer and Mrs. Sarah Mode. For the last three years he had made his home with his grandson, Hayden White. Funeral services for Mr. White were held Tuesday afternoon at the Miller cemetery in Cass Township, conducted by Rev. J. J. Carty and attended by many relatives, neighbors and friends. Interment was under the direction of the Elliott Funeral Home.
