Notes for Elizabeth WRIGHT
Source-Joan Hollis Yorgason 9 Oct 1993 telephone
The 1860 census of Napa, CA gives Elizabeth's birthplace as Virginia and age as 60. There are other references to her being born in North Carolina such as the 1850 census which gives her age as 48. No record of her death in California was found but it must have been before the 1880 census as she was lot listed then with Henry, a widower, in the home of his son, William Henry Hurt. She probably was buried in the Hartley Cemetery with Henry.26

Her parents are not known, however, the family apparently lived in Davidson County, Tennessee as several Wright's married members of the Josiah and Elizabeth Young Hurt family. In Part one of Vol. 4-6 of Wills and Inventories for Davidson County were listed Isaac Wright (died 28 August 1809) and William Wright (died 26 May 1815). In Williams' record are listed James Wright and Elizabeth Wright as administrators, property sold to Ed. Wright and a Francis in the final settlement. John Wright was a justice in Davidson County in1831 and 1836.26

There were many other Wrights in other counties of Tennessee. For Williamson County (south of Davidson) in the Will Book was found an inventory of John Wright's Store and Elizabeth Wrighr was Administrator.26

There is much more information in Lolita Long Lowry's notes. Further research is required on Elizabeth and her family.26

(1) Source-Jeff Williams conversation with Joan Hollis Yorgason 9 Oct 1993 by telephone (2) Letter of inquiry from Betty Lawrence, 345 High Chaparral Loop, Prescott, Arizona 86303 gave b. date and county.Henry Hurt born in Prince Edward County, VA about 1798, moved to Tennessee with his father Josiah and siblings after 1810. Henry married Elizabeth Wright in 1818 in Davidson County, TN. Little is known abour Henry while he was in Tennessee however he was given as the last child in division of his father's personal property on April 6, 1835 in Davidson County, Tennessee (V 10, part 2 p 495 Wills & administrations). In the "drawing" of the negores, Henry "drew Amanda valued at $250" and was to receive value up to $375 thru notes from those whose negroes were worth more than that. Copy is in Lolita Long Lowry's files. Henry moved his family to Henry County, MO after 1834. Missouri was a part of the Louisiana Territory from 1805-1812 and then became the Missouri Territory and entered the union as a slave state in 1821. As the area was settled counties were formed and the area to which Henry moved was organized from Lafayette County in 1834 as Rives County for William Cabell Rives, U.S. Senator from Virginia. In 1841 the name was changed to Henry to honor Patrick Henry, because Mr. Rives' politics had changed (History of Henry County, Missouri, Lamkin 1919). In the early 1830's, there were Osage Indians in the area and many wild animals. The winters were severe and the summers torrid and the area was considered too austere to conquer. However, by 1840, Missouri had become the gateway to the west. There was a 69% gain in population in th1840s. Thus Henry Hurt and probably other members of his family including the Binkleys (Henry's sister Elizabeth married John Binkley) were early settlers in this area. Henry Hurt was registered in the Missouri Territorial Pioneers which are people who settled in Missouri by 1850 and a Pioneer Family Certificate, application and document are in Lolita Long Lowry's files. Before leaving for California by wagon train, Henry and Elizabeth Hurt sold 600 acres for $2000 on 1 April 1853 which is recorded in Bk F p 268 Henry County Missouri Deeds. In the year of 1854 the Hurts came to Scotts Valley, CA. There were two brothers, William Henry and James W., called Bill & Jim, who had families and one single, Jack Hurt. There was also the father and mother and two sisters and their husbands. They were Mr. & mrs. James Russell and Mr. & Mrs. Steve Elkins. There is much more about these families in Lolita Long Lowry's information provided in August 1997. (From Scottslandia by Alice W. Deacon, page 9.) In the 1870 census, Henry was with James Russell and Louisa in Rio Vista, Solano County, California.26

Henry is shown on the 1820 and 1830 Tennessee censuses (Census CD 314 and 315); on the 1840 Missouri Census (Census CD 316); on the 1850 census for Tebo TWP, Henry County Missouri Henry is shown with the Ogans as neighbors. They are also shown on the 1860 California Census (Census CD 318) which corroborates his residences and emigrations over the years from 1818 when he married Elizabeth Wright in Davidson County to 1860 in California after his emigration there with his children in 1853.26

————————————————

The 1850 Missouri census - Henry County, MO., Tebo TWP, pg 010 shows Henry age 52, Elizabeth age 48, Charles age 20, James W. age 16, Andrew J age 12, Louisa age 10. His occupation is shown as farmer with $2000 as value of real estate owned. Birthplace of Henry is listed as Virginia with Elizabeth being born in North Carolina.26

Henry apparently died in Lake County as a Henry Hurt with no marker is buried at the Hartley Cemetery at Lakeport. A picture taken in the 1970s of this cemetery shows the area where the old unidentified graves are. In addition to the picture of Henry Hurt in our files provided by Paul Hansen, there is also a picture in LLL's files of Henry's son Jim with writing on the back: "Jim Hurt borned about 1825 in Tennessee came to California 1853-settled in Lake Co., 1854 homesteaded 160 and sold it to Godwin Scudamore 1869-then he helped to form a group to go to South America called their part the California Colony - he is my great uncle, signed James I. Hurt Mar 5, 1954".26
