!information received from Betty Lawrence on 28 Oct 1997.
From the files of Lolita Long Lowry:
The "History of Napa and Lake Counties California" by Slocum and published by Bowen & Co in SF in 1881 tells on page 122 of the killing of T.J. Warden by A.J. Hurt 31 December 1859 after a fight at a horse race. After his arrest Jack Hurt as he was known dug out of jail with assistance from the outside. After five years when according to the family he hid out in the mountains in the area, went to Montana and returned to Lake County and was employed. There is a creek in the mountains west of Scotts Valley still called Jack Hurt Creek. On his return to the area he was found working on Cobb Mountain and taken back to jail in April 1873 but was released by the court as the witnesses were scattered and it would be impossible to convict him. There was also an extensively signed petition for his discharge. Henry Mauldin the Lake County Historian has many records on the early Hurts and his files were examined by LLL. In his notes was found a news article from a 1947 Oakland Tribune called "The Knave" which tells that Jack Hurt stabbed Warden in the throat and heart and that he built a log cabin and hid out for many years.
