Melvin Lee Truckenmiller was born on Dec. 29, 1915, near Sibley, to Harry and Mary (Wehler) Truckenmiller. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Sibley, where he attended country school and graduated from Sibley High School in 1934. After graduation, he farmed with his father.
On March 3, 1937, Melvin married Marie Ray of Ocheyedan. They became the parents of four sons, Dennis, Alan, Robert, and Thomas. They farmed north of Sibley for three years and then moved to California where Melvin worked in a shipyard. He was inducted into the US Army in November of 1943, and served in the 522 Engineers Combat Co. in Italy until his discharge in 1945.
The family moved to Allendorf in 1946. After returning to Iowa, he did custom work and baling for farmers for some time before going to work for Dirks Construction. In the 1950's, he began working for Hattendorf Construction, which later became Glade Construction, building churches, schools and other structures throughout northwest Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. In the early 1970's, Mel began doing construction work on his own, which continued until recent health problems forced him to retire. Marie passed away in January of 1970.
On June 19, 1971, he married Kathy Schiphoff of Allendorf. They became the parents of one son, Mathew.
Melvin was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Allendorf until it closed in 1967, and taught Sunday School class there. He became a member of the Sibley United Methodist Church, where he was a chairman of the building committee, served as chairman of the board of trustees, taught Sunday School, and was past president of the administrative board.
Survivors include his wife; five sons: Dennis (Roberta) Truckenmiller of Sibley; Alan (Mavis) Truckenmiller of Tucson, AZ; Robert ((Diane) Truckenmiller of Ocheyedan, Thomas (Linda) Truckenmiller of Hinsdale, IL; and Mathew Truckenmiller of Wayne, NE; three stepdaughters: Pam (Kermit) DeBoom of Sibley; Patty (Brian) Dreessen of Waverly; and Lisa (Randy) Sixta of Lake Benton, MN; 10 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Donald Truckenmiller of Sibley. Melvin was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents; two sisters: Edna Davids and Betty Lou Truckenmiller; and two granddaughters: Cindy Truckenmiller and Susan Truckenmiller.

Marie Truckenmiller, age 53, died Saturday, January 24, 1970, at the Osceola Community hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 27, at the United Methodist church at Sibley with Rev. P. Boyd Mather officiating. Burial was in the Ocheyedan Township cemetery at Ocheyedan.
Music was provided by Mrs. John Van Der Linden with Mrs. Richard Krambeck as organist.
Pallbearers were Arnold Molendorp, Harold Molendorp, Lyle Dirks, Leonard Plum, Fred Vander Veen and George Steen.
