"Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, a daughter of John Henry and Permelia Anne Hamilton, was born April 7, 1860, in Carlisle, Kentucky, and died February 24, 1936, in St Joseph, Mo., at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 17 days.
In early life she moved with her parents from Kentucky to Indiana, where they lived four years. At the age of 9, she moved with the family to Missouri by way of an oxen team in a stage coach crossing the Ohio River by ferry and locating in Mexico, Mo., where they settled and engaged in farming. Later they moved to Mercer county, Mo., locating near Princeton. She received her education at the Fairley and White Oak schools, later teaching in that neighborhood.
At the age of sixteen she was married to James Mekin Hurt on June 14, 1866. Two children blessed this home, Thurston Ray, born Aug. 43, 1877, who died June 18, 1925, and Ferne, a foster daughter. The husband, Mekin Hurt, died Feb. 2, 1926, passing away in Princeton.
She was converted together with her husband and daughter during the ministry of Byron H. Wilson and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in Princeton. She was a consistent and devout Christian, always thinking of others before herself and attending Sunday school and church regularly before her affliction.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Fern Arnold of Garden City, Kan.; one sister, Mrs. A. B. George of Beaumont, Tex.; two brothers, William, who early in life went to Canada, and George of Ottumwa, Ia.; one half-sister, Mrs. John Lewis of Princeton; four half-brothers, Lloyd, Thomas, Luther and Callie Prather; three grandsons, Glen Hurt of Princeton, James Arnold, who is attending college in Bowling Green, Ky., and William Arnold, who is attending college in Garden City, Kan.; and one granddaughter, Mrs. Cuma Wake of DeWitt, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, at the Moss Funeral Chapel by Rev. V. F. Walker. Interment was made in the Princeton Cemetery." The Princeton Telegraph (Princeton, Missouri), March 4, 1936
