Simon Hadley II

Simon Hadley was born in 1675, son of Simon and Katherine (Talbot) Hadley, of Dublin, Ireland. In 1697 he married Ruth Keran (Kern) who was also born in Ireland. They (650) joined Moate Meeting, Society of Friends, County Meath, near Dublin, in 1706 at the same time his parents did.

The Simon Hadley family came to America from County West Meath, Ireland, near the Kings County boundary line, about 1712 and settled in New Castle County, now in the State of Delaware, near the New Garden township line, Chester County, Pennsylvania. At Newark Monthly Meeting (later Kennett) held at Center Meeting House (near Centerville, Delaware) on the 4th of August 1716, Simon Hadley produced a certificate from Moate Monthly Meeting in the County of West Meath, Ireland, which was accepted.

He must have been a man of wealth, as evidenced by the fact that he purchased the "Manor of Steyning" containing more than 15,000 acres of fertile land some thirty miles south of Philadelphia, largely in Chester County, Pennsylvania, but extending into New Castle County, Delaware. He built a somewhat pretentious home for that period in 1717, which as late as 1916 was still a comfortable and well-built structure of two and a half stories of stucco covered stone. It appears that he was a Justice of the Peace, and sometimes served as Judge of the New Castle County courts. In the Calendar of Wills, New Castle County, he is listed as yeoman of Mill Creek Hundred.

Ruth (Keran) Hadley died 18 December 1750, and on 22nd day of the 7th month 1752 he married Phebe (Grubb) Buffington, daughter of John and Frances Grubb and widow of Richard Buffington of Bradbury, Chester County, Pennsylvania. She was a minister.

Simon Hadley died suddenly in 1756. It is said that when a very old man he was killed in his stable by a negro male servant who had planned to rob him of the money he was supposed to be carrying. He was buried in New Garden Meeting grounds beside his first wife, Ruth. His will was written in 1755 and probated 17 February 1756. In it he named 47 of his 50 grandchildren.

It is also said that the British Army camped on his farm on the night before the Battle of Brandywine.690

Simon Hadley came to America from Kings county, Ireland where he was born 1675. Came to Chester county PA 1712 and died there 1756. The Delaware boundary drawn in 1754 passed through his property, placing his home and official residence in New Castle county Delaware but leaving most of his holdings in PA. His home built 1717 was still standing in 1961 and was occupied. It was near Hockessin, Delaware.

His grandson, Thomas Hadley, son of Joshua and Patience Brown Hadley was a captain in the Revolution. He lived Fayetteville NC. He was killed in his home by Tory raiders. He was buried on the premises, but in 1935 his body was removed to Memorial Cemetery, Wilson, North Carolina.
