He moved his family from Whitley Co. to Mercer Co. Missouri in 1844. He died there after the Civil War in Jackson Co.,Missouri. He and Polly were first cousins. Her dad was William Cummins, brother to Margaret. After Joseph's death Polly returned to Whitley County with a son.

Married in Missouri. He was Capt. in the Missouri State Guard,1859-1860. Joined the Union Army' n Civil War.
4c. John Johnson, b.1840 d. m .
He rode on horse back to missouri at age 4 It is said he lived at Webb City Mo. in later life.
4d. Joseph Joshua Johnson, b.1843 Never Married
Said to have served in Quantrill's guerrilla band with his brother, James. It was said he was killed in 1865. Arthur Johnson said Joe was hanged for voting illegally.

Joseph E Johnson and Mary Polly Cummins are part of my paternial grandmother's Johnson line from Whitley/Knox CO KY. This family moved to Mercer CO MO n 1844, but child #1, William Meek Johnson,(my grandmother's great grandfather)
returned to Whitley Co Ky.
Child #5, Joseph Joshus Johnson died in 1865 while riding
with Quantrill's Raiders.

1, William (Buggy) Meeks Johnson, March 31, 1825 Spruce Creek, Whitley Co., Ky. died November 13, 1903 Meadow Creek, Whitley County, Ky. William was married to Susan Ann McKeehan September 09, 1847 in Whitley CO KY.
Susan was born March 15, 1832 in Whitley CO KY and died 1899 in Whitley CO. William and Susan are buried in Wm Meeks Johnson cemetery, Whitley County, Kentucky.
2, Zachary Johnson, 1827 Whitley KY
3, James Johnson, 1829 Whitley KY died 1849
4, John Johnson, 1840 Whitley KY
5, Joseph Joshua Johnson, 1842 Whitley KY, Killed 1865 in MO while attempting to return to KY as part of Quantrill's Raiders.
6, Henry Clay Johnson, 1846 Mercer CO MO, married to an Unknown Glover about 1865 in MO.
7, Rachel Johnson, 1848 Mercer, Missouri; married about 1870 in MO to an Unknown Nove.
The parents of Joseph E. Johnson were William Johnson, 1770 Buncombe, North Carolina and Susan Cummins, 1778 North Carolina.
I will be happy to send you the Johnson line back to William Johnston (note the name change) 1648 Isle of Wight, Virginia and Sarah Griffeth, 1652 aslo of Isle of Wight, Virginia. This family is said to be of the Clan Johnston of the Low lands of Scotland.
