Notes for Emmett Montress WARD
Emmett was a wonderful Christian man who was loved by all who knew him. He was married to Cynthia Molly Collins, who died in 1925, followed by Virginia Alberta Webb, who survived him. He and his first wife adopted twin daughters: Annis Margaret and Elizabeth Ann, whose mother died following child-birth. Emmett owned and operated hardware stores in Dexter and Arkansas City, Kansas. He served as an elder in the Church of Christ for many years.

Molly was baptized into Christ at the Lamine church of Christ in 1886. Emmett Ward, her husband accompanied her body on the train from Dexter to Lamine so she would be near her family.

Virginia had mumps when she was about 9 years old and complications caused her to lose her hearing. Her parents felt she would need a vocation to support herself so they sent her to several art schools. While she was studying in Kansas City, she worked for two men who were starting a greeting card company. She was one of six artists who hand-painted the cards. That company became Halmark Cards.
She painted in oils and watercolors but mainly painted China well into her declining years. She was the second wife of Emmett Montress Ward.688
