Notes for Alexander SHOCK
Alexander Shock, a son of Jacob and Mary (Green) Shock, was born in Nicholas County VA (WV) March 9, 1815 and died in Gilmer County, VA (WV) August 10, 1892.  He married Eliza Stump about 1840.  Eliza, a daughter of Absalom and Margaret (Bush) Stump, as born in Lewis County VA (WV) January 17, 1822 and died in Gilmer County, WV August 30, 1914. They located on the Right Fork of Steer Creek in Gilmer County where Tanners Fork joins.
Eliza used to tell about first coming to the area. She said that her father Absolom Stump lived near Rosedale. But, she and Alexander moved downstream built a shed, covered with brush on three sides, with one end open. A fire outside the open end front warmed the place. They lived there until they built the log house. The house was made of hewn poplar logs.
About 1940, children at Shock school were able to read the date “1840” on the top chimney stones. Coy and Boyd Norman, sons of Andrew and Mary Catherine Norman, often visited “Aunt Lizey.” Their parents lived in a house a couple of hundred yards from the log house. Boyd was born in December 1899 and Coy in July 1901. Their mother sent them to check on Aunt Lizey in the years around 1912 and perform any small chores she needed. She told them stories of her early life there and how Alexander used to go deer hunting in the morning while she was preparing breakfast. She told them that when the house was built, the chimney “didn’t draw right.” Thast is, the draft was inadequate and the fire was poor. Another course of stone was added to the top and the date was cut into one of the stones.
Alexander Shock's grandson, Newton Boone, was responsible for the naming of the post office. Newton circulated a petition in 1912, asserting that the new post office should be named Shock after his grandfather, Alexander Shock. At the time, Newton ran a store there and hoped to be the first postmaster. Taft was President at the time. When the post office opened in 1913, Woodrow Wilson was President. Since Wilson was a Democrat and Newton was a Republican, Newton did not become the first postmaster.529
