GRAND JUNCTION -- Ethel M. Johnson, age 89, died Tuesday morning, March 19, 2002, at the Larchwood inns in Grand Junction.
Ethel M. Wadkins was born in Dalhart, Texas on Nov. 24,1912, the daughter of William Hardin Wadkins and Nora Etta (Ward) Watkins. She grew up and attended school in the Dalhart area.
On Sept. 24, 1927, Ethel was united in marriage with Eddie Joseph Johnson at the Dallam County Courthouse in Dalhart, Texas. Ed and Ethel moved to Colorado in 1933 with their two children: Twila Marie and Roy E., first settling in Grand Junction where they worked in the fruit orchards. A few months later the Johnson family moved to Montrose where they worked for F D. Helm. After they moved to Montrose, another daughter, Sharon, was born. The Johnsons farmed in the Riverside and Uncompahgre communities before moving into the town of Montrose in 1958. In 1977 Ed and Ethel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Riverside Grange Hall.
Ethel worked for the Wesco Store at Uncompahgre until 1959 when she moved to Estes Park where she was a chef at the Timberline Steakhouse and a baker at Brodie's Market. In November of 1973, Ethel returned to Montrose and was employed as a journeyman baker at City Market until her retirement in 1977.
Ethel moved to Dalhart, Texas in 1982 and lived with her sister, Pearl, until 1989 when she once again returned to Montrose.
She was a Member of the Montrose Christian Church:
While Ethel enjoyed her work, her family was her dearest possession: She enjoyed sewing for her family crocheting and doing needlework: Ethel was also an avid reader.
Surviving family members who were blessed to share Ethel's life include a son, Roy Johnson and wife Elaine, of Montrose; and a daughter, Sharon and husband Virgil Kilgore, of Grand Junction.
Ethel was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 granddaughters: Linda and husband David Donahue, of Broomfield; Nora Reed and Joe Schroeder of Craig and Mack; Janelle and husband Jim Rudisill, of Durango; Joyce and husband Larry Schank, of Cave Creek, Ariz.; Sue and husband Phil Frederick, of Grand Junction; Beverly and husband Matt Roth, of Olathe; Cheryl and husband Dan Squier, of Grand Junction; Teresa and husband Marty Wright, of Tome, N.M.; Tami Presley, of Memphis, Ten.; Connie and husband Todd Peery, of Englewood; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
