He enlisted in the Army after high school. He was a helicopter mechanic, crew chief and class and class instructor. He had one tour in Vietnam. He did a tour in the UN peacekeeping zone between Egypt and Israel. He was killed there in a helicopter crash. There is a barrack complex at Fort Bragg which is named after him.

Army CWO3 Charles Neely Hurt, 34, of Memphis, was one of three soldiers killed yesterday in an Army helicopter crash on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

Charles, who was born in Memphis and attended Central High School, was on temporary duty in the Mideast with a multinational peace-keeping force.

A contingent of U.S. troops make up part of there U.N.multinational peace-keeping force on the Sinai Peninsula which separates Israel from Egypt.

Hurt was a pilot on a maintenance test flight, an Army spokesman said. The downed craft was spotted about 2:15 p.m. (Memphis time) near the town of Ras Nas Rani.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sandra Tutor Hurt and a son Charles Neely Hurt Jr. of Ft. Bragg, NC; and a sister, Mrs. Etherl Newsum and a brother, John R. Hurt, both of Memphis.
