Notes for Mary Ethel WOOD
She had a daughter named Imogene who died in an accidental fire. After this, Ethel had another child, Arch Wood Hurt. She died two weeks after his birth. At that time, her sister, Sade adopted Arch. It was a very sad time in the Hurt family. These events caused many changes in the family in the later years.
Notes for John Robert (Spouse 1)
He was a prominent Dyersburg businessman and civic leader. When he came to Dyersburg, he was connected with the Baker-Watkins Supply Company and then entered business with John Atkins. They operated the Atkins-Hurt Men’s Clothing Store.
John Robert Hurt was a member of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen at the time of his death and he was a member of the City Board of Education. He was also chairman of the Dyer County Circuit Court Jury Commission. He served as Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
