Notes for Edna Alta (Spouse 1)
Edna Alta Reader was born and raised in Jetmore Kansas. Growing up her house was also a nursing home that her mother Maggie owned and operated. Her father, Elmer, was a farmer and the town treasurer. They lived through the Great Depression and the dust bowl days in Jetmore. After high school Edna attended Baylor University and later became a nurse. While attended Baylor, she became friends with Mildred Hurt and would later marry Mildred's brother Charles. Charles, who she called Sid, was just getting home from WW2 and retiring from the Army. They moved to Phoenix Arizona with their oldest son Sam in 1946-47. Edna hired on with St. Joseph hospital and soon became the head nurse of the maternity ward. In 1958 she read an ad in the Phoenix newspaper that the Phoenix Police Department was hiring nurses to work in the jail. It paid $10 a month more than the hospital and she said it sounded interesting and exciting. After a couple of years as a jail nurse, she approached the Chief of Police and asked if she could become a policewoman. The chief made it possible and Enda soon became the first Phoenix police woman. She served 20 years and retired as a Sargent. She started the domestic violence unit and advocated for abused women and children. After retirement she moved to Sterling, Kansas to care for her mother, father and her aunt Clearance.

On Find A Grave.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
