(1) Apr 2002: email from Julia LeVesque with copy of inquiry posted on RootsWeb Message Board - Message [Hurt] "Found record that Garland Hurt 1st married Martisha Thurston, had 10 children and then 2nd marriage was to my g/aunt Rebecca Dailey on 1 Nov 1831, Tazewell Co., VA (Annals of Tazewell Co., VA page 92). Garland was the eldest child of eight children born to Moses Hurt, Jr. and Elizabeth Shelton. He married Martisha Thurston (daughter of John Thurston and Elizabeth Crabtree) on 25 Sep 1789 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. They had twelve Children:
Isaac Jacob
William Darby

John T.
Mekin Spencer I (Uncle of Mekin S. Hurt, author of Mekin S. Hurt II papers--see source below)
Absalom E.
Elizabeth T.
Moses (had a son named Mekin S. Hurt
Mary Polly
James Leslie
Sarah "Sally"
Cynthia A.
Garland Hurt and his brother Moses Hurt (d. 1849) moved from Pittsylvania County, VA to Washington County, VA in about 1786. In about 1803, Garland Hurt moved his family to Russell County, VA, which borders Washington County on the west. Garland settled with his family at Barret's Chapel on Swords Creek in Russell County and lived there the rest of a long life and died there on 7 Nov 1839. His wife, Martitia, as he called her, died there in about 1818. He married again to Rebecca Unknown.
Garland was an officer in the Revolutionary War and his son, William Darby Hurt, was an officer in the War of 1812. Garland's son, Moses, had his father's war pistol and saber for years but they were finally lost. The saber was made of silver, bright as a new silver dollar. The barrel of the pistol was of brass. The whole pistol was about 18" long.
The grandfather of Garland Hurt was a grand nephew of Princess Rachel Howard (Cedar County, MO biography).
