(3) Records from Varla Wright, Phoenix, Arizona - June 1996 (She has wife as Elizabeth Cocke or Cox. That one record source showed her as Elizabeth Shelton. She has father listed as Stephen Cocke of Amelia Co., Virginia. (He is in my records as RIN 27013.) Elizabeth Cocke or Cox was b. abt. 1736 of Amelia Co., Virginia.)
(4) The Early Hurt Family of VA, Oscar Hurt, 1958, FHL# 854152-4 pgs. 10-11,63. She survived her husband by at least a year, possibly longer. One source calls her Elizabeth Shelton

"There is a controversy about the maiden name of his wife, Elizabeth. She is sometimes identified as Elizabeth Cocke (Cox), the daughter of Steven Cock, whose plantation adjoined that of Moses Hurt Sr. However, the will of Crispin Shelton lends credence to those who claim that she was Elizabeth Shelton. His will, entered in Pittsylvania County Will Book 9, on page 524, 29 October 1787, was proved 17 February 1794. To daughter, Elizabeth Hurt, he gives "during her life Negro boys Aaron and Isaac, Negro woman Amey and negro girl Aggee and all their increase to be equally divided amongst my said daughter Elizabeth's children. "

"On 19 February 1816, we read that 'agreeable to the above order of the worshipful Court of Pittsylvania County as directed to divide the estate of Elizabeth hurt dec'd according to the will of Crispin Shelton dec'd the undersigned commissioners have proceeded to divide the Negroes as follows to wit - we give to Reddick Shelton a negro by name of Hope; to the heirs of West D. Hurt, boy Isaac; to Ezekiel Hendrick, boy Abram; to Garland Hurt, girl Aggy (note: Aggy in Garland's will in 1839 Russell County); to Moses Hurt boy Aaron; to Thomas Littlepage, boy Tom; to David Shelton, woman Amy and boy; To Absalom Hurt, a girl Souely."

Elizabeth Hurt had a son named Garland, who named one of his sons Meekin Spencer Hurt. Elizabeth Shelton had a brother named Spencer Shelton and another brother's son (Abraham) was named Meekin. Possibly this is the grandson named in Crispin's will as inheriting a slave, Davy. Abraham Shelton died before his father Crispin.

Thank you for contacting me.  The lady now has dementia and it is hard for her to communicate.

She was successful in joining the DAR under Patriot Moses Hurt.   We did an Analysis of tax and court orders involving Thomas W. Hurst.  Tax records of Christian County, KY, Thomas Hurst assigned as survey for bond of his sister Lettie’s marriage, guardianship of his purposed siblings all point to Thomas as a son of West D and Lucy Shelton Hurst

Thank you,
