William Hurt never married and was said to have drowned in the Eel River in 1905. According to a Mendocino County Clerk's records, a William Hurt of Covelo was committed to Mendocino State Hospital on 29 Novemer 1898 as he threatened suicide at the Grand Hotel in Ukiah, Califrnia.
