Notes for James Whitset HURT
!information received from Betty Lawrence on 28 Oct 1997.
James Whitset Hurt, referred to as the first white child born in Scotts Valley, was married to Alice Scudamore, daughter of Godwin Scudamore. She was the sister of Sarah Scudamore who married Alice's brother-in-law, Charles Henry Hurt. Their three children were all born in Lake County before the family moved to the Round Valley area where he was a blacksmith. Alice died before thier move and was buried in Lake County. Jim was assisted in raising their children by his brother Charles' family. He was known as "Uncle Fat Jim" because of his size and it also differentiated him from his nephew, James, son of his brother Charles.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
