Notes for Marian Elza HANSEN
!information received from Betty Lawrence on 28 Oct 1997.
Marian Hansen is a descendant of a long line of California Pioneer families.

!She was employed for most of her adult life as a bookkeeper for various firms. Among them, Hills Brothers Coffee and McClelland Florist in San Francisco, Hansen Furniture, Antoni Truck Lines and finally for the Assessor's Office in Ukiah, CA. from where she retired. One of the memories her daughter, Betty, has of her employment with McClelland was that each week, she would bring home a box of gardenias. Betty, who was about 5-6 years old at the time, would wear one to Sunday School each week where she was known as the Gardenia Girl.

!Marian enjoyed gardening, raising prize-winning Irises. She was a member of the local Iris Society and won blue ribbons with her iris. Her garden was always the envy of all who saw it.
Notes for Torrence Putnam (Spouse 1)

Torrence Swindell spent his childhood in many different locations, among them, Oakland, CA; Torrance, CA; Deming, NM; and finally in Ukiah, CA where he graduated from Ukiah High School. It was in high school that he met his wife, Marian Hansen. They were married shortly after graduation.

!Torrence worked for Standard Stations when they were first married. they lived in San Francisco until 1940. They then purchased a home in Richmond, CA and after WWII started, he worked briefly in the Shipyards in Richmond and then joined the Army Transport Service. He served in the Pacific. The ATS transported servicemen to the Pacific Theater of Operations and brought back the wounded to the United States. In 1942, they sold their house in Richmond so that Marian and their daughter Betty could live in Ukiah near Marian's family. Their second daughter, Kathryn was born in Ukiah on VJ Day, 1945. After the War, Torrence worked in Ukiah as an auto mechanic and then for E.C. Kraft as a store manager until the store was sold. He then was employed by Redwood Auto from where he retired. They owned a home on Berkeley Drive in Ukiah.

!Torrence belonged to F & AM Abell Lodge in Ukiah and served as Associate Guardian of Job's Daughters for several years.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
