Gloucestershire From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gloucestershire (pronounced /ˈɡlɒstərʃər/ ( listen) GLOSS-tər-shər) is a county in South West England. The county comprises part of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn, and the entire Forest of Dean.
The county town is the city of Gloucester, and other principal towns include Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, and Tewkesbury.
When considered as a ceremonial county, Gloucestershire borders the preserved county of Gwent in Wales (now Monmouthshire), and in England the ceremonial counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and Bristol. As a non-metropolitan county, it excludes the area covered by the South Gloucestershire unitary authority.
History
Gloucestershire is a historic county mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the 10th century, though the areas of Winchcombe and the Forest of Dean were not added until the late 11th century. Gloucestershire originally included the "small town" of Bristol. The "local" rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristol's population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Bristol became part of the administrative County of Avon in 1974.
Upon the abolition of Avon in 1996, the region north of Bristol became a unitary authority area of South Gloucestershire and is now part of the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire.598

"As early as 1650 and 1653, we find members of the Hurt family having migrated from England to the Virginia Colony. Among those was William hurt Sr., who appears to have migrated to Virginia in 1650 and who patented 213 acrews of land in St. Stephen's Parish in New kent County in 1673/74. He was born in England about 1630 and died in King William County, Virginia, after 1704. he was the father of John Hurt who died in 1723; and John was the father of William Hurt, The Elder, who died in Caroline County, Virginia, in 1749."

————————————————

"From Caroline County the Hurt family migrated into Amherst and Bedford Counties, Virginia, and southward until descendants of these early families are found nearly everywhere. It would appear that early in the history of the Hurt family, one or more intermarried into the Garland family for the name "Garland" Hurt occurs frequently, even to the present time."
