'.... shortly after the Confederate Conscription Act was passed, Wiley Hamilton Cunningham and Samuel Flanagin were working together near their homes when Confederate soldiers rode up and told them they had to go into the army. Sam pointed toward his house and asked if he could go say good bye to his wife. He was given permission to do so. He ran up to his house, entered the front door, grabbed his gun and ran out the back door and up the small mountain in the rear. The soldiers never found him. ....'
Charlie Cunningham was told the story by his grandmother - Sarah Brakebill Cunningham, Wiley Cunningham's widow.

Notes for Wiley Hamilton (Spouse 1)
Wiley is reported to have been conscripted into the Confederate Army while working on the family farm on Nails Creek in Blount Co, TN.He was sent to active duty in Mississippi. He was captured May 16, 1863 at the Battle of Champions Hill (Baker’s Creek) near Vicksburg, MS and was subsequently taken to POW Camp Morton, IN. Information from the National Archives, Washington, DC, indicates that Wiley Hamilton was enlisted as a private on April 1, 1863 in Knoxville by a Major Peck into Company K, 3rd Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers, CSA, for the duration of the war.47
