Battle of Champions Hill by Kurz & Allison
“Battle of Champions Hill”, Published by Kurz and Allison, Art Publishers, Chicago, Illinois (1887). Called by some the Battle of Bakers Creek or the Battle of Champion Hill, it may have been the most important fight of the American Civil War. It's remembered as the battle the North needed to win to achieve ultimate victory. It's remembered as the battle the South needed to win if the Confederacy was to survive. It's remembered as a savage struggle and as General Hovey said in his Official Report, "It was literally a hill of death.” Wiley Hamilton Cunningham fought in this battle and was taken prisoner by the Union Army here.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
