The Historical Research Center Family Name History - Therwhanger

The family name Therwhanger is a variant of the German surname Thurwanger

and is considered by scholars to be of habitation origin. Habitation family
names refer to the place where the original bearer resided. In this particular
instance, the surname is derived from the Old High German "durnin wang," meaning
“thorny - grassy slope," indicating that the original bearer lived near such a
feature. European references to the family name include a record of MagdaIena
Thurwanger, who married Adam Paul in a Catholic Church in BundenthaI. Pfalz,
Bavaria, Germany on February 12th, 1810. Sibilla Thurwanger was christened in
the same church on February llth, 1845. She was the daughter of Philip
Thurwanger and Magdalena Kunz Thurwanger. Bearers of the surname to the United
States include Camelle Thurwanger who was born in France in 1856 and was a
former resident of Paris. She arrived on the ship La Bretagne from the part of
Le Havre, Sein-Inferior, France, on the 25th of September, 1904. She was forty-
eight years of age and she was a married woman.
North American references to Therwhanger include a record of John C.
Therwhanger who was born in 1866 and was living in Haskell, Texas in 1930,
according to the Federal Census of that year. Armie R. Therwhanger was
documented in the same census also as a resident of Haskell, Texas. Additional
North American references to Therwhanger incIude a record of H. N. Therwhanger
who was born in 1890 an was living in Tom Green, Texas in 1920. Ruby B.
Therwhanger was documented in the same census also as a resident of Tom Green.

I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
