Notes for Margery BROWN
John Piggott Jr. will:

A Quaker; origins obscure, possibly Irish, probably born in or before 1680 & perhaps as early as 1670 (no age information has yet been discovered - his first wife was born in 1674); modern D.N.A. evidence indicates an ancestral link to the PIGOTT family of Broxton or Butley, Cheshire, of which a junior branch was established in Chetwynd, Co Salop, ca 1430, &/or their junior branch which was established in Queen's County, Ireland, ca 1558.

Three marriages in Philadelphia were witnessed by an unidentified John PIGGOTT in 1702-03; we cannot yet be certain which of two John PIGGOTTs this was (the other, without doubt, was the spouse of Alice REYNIER) - although in one of the marriages, one of his co-witnesses was Rebecca HARDIMAN, later the wife of the subject of this memorial; apart from this, no other mention has yet been found in Quaker records which attaches unequivocally to the John PIGGOTT of this memorial, prior to his 1st marriage, recorded at Concord Monthly Meeting, Chester County, PA, 13 [2 Mo] Apr 1705, to Rebecca HARDIMAN, the widow of Abraham HARDIMAN (d 1699) & before him of John WILSFORD (died 1695).

Rebecca was born at Hindley, Lancashire, 24 Aug 1674, a daughter of Henry BAKER by Margaret HARDIMAN.

John & Rebecca were granted a certificate to move from Concord to Duck Creek, Kent County, Delaware, 10 May 1708, & were settled there before 18 Mar 1709; they had issue:

1. Mary PIGGOTT, born 2 [6 Mo] Aug 1706; possibly married WILLIAMS.
2. Rebecca PIGGOTT, born 1 [10 Mo] Dec 1707.
3. Hannah PIGGOTT, born 14 [8 Mo] Oct 1709; married Samuel WHITE.
4. (son), born 1710-11; died in infancy.

Rebecca died in childbirth, 1710-11; John married 2ndly, Nottingham MM, 18 Mar 1713, Margery BROWN (daughter of James BROWN & Honour CLAYTON, & sister of William BROWN, who married her sister Hester BAKER); they settled at Nottingham, Cecil County, Maryland, before 1718.

John & Margery had issue, births recorded at Nottingham MM:

5. James PIGGOTT, born 16 [11 Mo] Jan 1713-14; died young.
6. Margery PIGGOTT, born 30 [6 Mo] Aug 1715.
7. John PIGGOTT, born 18 [2 Mo] Apr 1717; married Rachel REYNOLDS.
8. Samuel PIGGOTT, born 11 [6 Mo] Aug 1718; married Rebecca BOWEN.
9. Elizabeth PIGGOTT, born 10 [5 Mo] Jul 1720; married John CROMPTON.
10. Abigail PIGGOTT, born 30 [11 Mo] Jan 1721-22.
11. Susannah PIGGOTT, born 13 [1 Mo] Mar 1723-24; marr Richard KEMP.
12. Jeremiah PIGGOTT, born 19 [6 Mo] Aug 1725; died in infancy.
13. William PIGGOTT, born 8 [6 Mo] Aug 1726; married Sarah PIKE.
14. (son), born 10 [4 Mo] Jun 1729; died aged 6 days.
15. Jeremiah (II) PIGGOTT, born 26 [8 Mo] Oct 1730; married Rachel MAYNOR.
16. Benjamin PIGGOTT, born 21 [9 Mo] Nov 1732; married Mary HADLEY.
17. (son), born 26 [8 Mo] Oct 1734; died aged 4 days.
18. Margarey PIGGOTT, born 20 [12 Mo] Feb 1734-35; married 1stly, Joseph BUCKINGHAM, & 2ndly, Thomas LINDLEY.
