Obit:
Edward Leon Akers, age 79, of Bolivar, MO, and formerly of Fair Play, MO and Kansas City, KS, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, in his home. He was born December 18, 1934, in Kansas City, KS, to Preston and Emma (Root) Akers. He was united in marriage to Hazel Marie White November 1, 1952, in Omaha, Arkansas and to this union seven children were born.

Big Ed "Butch" was a Journeyman Wireman First Class Retired member of the IBEW Local #124, for over 55 years. He and Hazel moved the family to Fair Play in 1967 to work as the General Foreman on the Stockton Dam. He then worked at Truman Dam at Warsaw, missle sites throughout central Missouri and Kansas, along with many other industrial construction projects.

He was a member of the Fair Play and Bolivar Masonic Lodge. He was an avid golfer, and the Marshall at Silo Ridge Country Club for about 10 years. Ed loved hunting, fishing, bowling, and drag racing.

Ed enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and especially his grandkids. He "loved" spending time with Hazel on shopping trips, and loved going out to eat. He enjoyed traveling and taking trips with family all over the country, making sure that the local golf courses were up to par. Ed and Hazel took two trips to the watch the Masters Tournament. He was an excellent joke and story teller. There was no doubt that when you were around Ed, you were guaranteed to have a smile on your face. He never knew a stranger. His vehicles were his pride and joy, and he took exceptional care of them.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children; a sister Pauline McKenzie; and a brother Preston Akers.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Hazel Akers of the home; five children: Donna and husband Danny Reichert of Bolivar, MO, Ed and wife Cathy of Springfield, MO, Dawn and husband Kenny Jones of Polk, MO, Cliff and wife Kim of Republic,MO, and Eric and wife Ann of Lebanon, MO; eight grandchildren: Hillary, Kendra, Kristi, Michael, Katie, Emily, Justin, Molly, Danalee, Susan, David, Chanda, and Christa; 13 great grandchildren; a sister Geraldine Stephens of Kansas City, MO; several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
