Notes for Nancy Mathilda “Til” RYAN
Nancy Mathilda was first married just three weeks before her fifteenth birthday. The wedding was in the home of her father and mother. She was not yeat eighteen when her husband died during the Civil War. Nancy became a Quaker in her later years of life.47

The following is a retype of the OBITUARY from the newspaper - Death of Mrs. R. A. Troutman - Mrs. R. A. Troutman passed away at her home in Palins early Tuesday morning, death resulting from a complication of diseases following an attack of influenza. She was nearly eight years old.Funeral services were held at the West Glendale church south of Plains Wednesday afternoon, and burial was in the West Glendale cemetery. the funeral sermon was given by Mrs. Iola Steen, pastor of the West Glendale church, and the funeral arrangements were in charge of E. W. Fletcher of Meade.
Nancy Mathilda Ryan was born August 11, 1845 at Knoxville, Tenn., and departed this lifeApril 21, 1925, at Plains, Kans., aged 79 years, 8 months, and 21 days. she was united in marriage to Henry Hendrix, and to this union was born one child, Nancy Ann, born October 21,1861, and who died May 31, 1899. this husband gave his life in the service of his country during the Civil war. After the war she was united in marriage to John Hanes, and to this union was born one child, Beatrice Ida Packard. She was united in marriage to robert A. Troutman Feb. 17, 1870. To this union were born seven children, William M., Amanda C., Henry M., Martin, robert A., Louise Gowens, and an unnamed infant, who passed away soon after birth, Amanda C., Martin, and Robert A. also passed on before their mother. There are left to mourn their loss, her husband, William M. of Centerview, Kans., Ida Packard, henry M., and Louise Gowens of Plains, thrity-three grandchildren, fifty-one great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, a sister Mrs. Sarah McCollum of Bosworth, Mo., a brother George Ryan of Salem, Ore., and a host of loving friends, who feel keenly their loss of a faithful, loving companion, mother, and friend. But they rejoice in her gain. She gave her heart to Jesus when a child, and she, with her husband, united with the Friends church about thirty-five years ago, and remained a faithful “Soldier of the Cross.”54

"On July 19, 1860, when Nancy was 14 years old and 343 days, she and John C. Hendrix were married in Texas County, MO. at the home of her father, Morgan Ryan by Westley Nall, a Minister of the Gospel. (same one that married Wiley & Mahala Ryan) It is stated in the pension records of John C. Hendrix that in 1862, the records to this marriage were destroyed by the Rebels. She was called Mathilda, Tildie or just "Til". She and John C. Hendrix were only married 2 years and 287 days when he died in the Civil War.
Nancy Mathilda was first married to John Hendrix who was killed in the Civil War and they had one daughter. Her second marriage was to a Rev. John Hanes who joined a wagon train going West where he hoped to establish a home and return for his family. Indians attacked the train, massacred the people and burned the wagons. A second daughter was born to Nancy Mathilda.
Third marriage Robert Allen Troutman, he was the last surviving Civil War Veteran in the State of Kansas--and one of the last in the Nation. The first child of Nancy Mathilda Ryan-Hendrix was (a) Nancy Ann Hendrix, born 21 October 1861. The second child of Nancy Mathilda Ryan-Hanes was (b) Beatrice Ida Hanes, born 19 March 1866. Robert Allen and Nancy Mathilda Ryan Troutman were the parents of six children: (c) William Madison Troutman born 31 December 1871; (d) Amanda Caroline Troutman born 08 January 1874, died 26 July 1898; (e) Henry Morgan Troutman born 17 April 1876; (f) Martin Abraham Troutman born 16 April 1878, died 15 August 1898; (g) Robert Allen Troutman Jr., born 25 December 1881, died 09 March 1896; and (h) Louisa Troutman born 01 February 1884."82

Notes for John Columbus (Spouse 1)
Clovis Breakbill 1/3/96 writes that John C. Hendrix served in the 25th Regiment, Iowa Volunteers in the War Between the States. His last letter to his wife was dated March 10, 1863. He, apparently, was killed in action shortly before March 10, 1863.

During the Civil War he wrote home on Feb 16, 1863 to his wife Mathilda and enclosed a few lines to Jane, stating: “Well, Jane I never expected to hear from you. I want you to write to me and tell me where Marthy and Dave and Papa are?” In 1863 John C. Hendrix’s wife and child lived next door to Wiley and Mahala J. Ryan in Henry Co., IA per census.54

Now we know that family lived with Morgan in the Civil war, and that Morgan went to Iowa, I will have to look at John C. Hendrix letters and see where he told Nancy Mathilda Ryan to pickup her allotment money. John C. Hendrix joined the war in Iowa here is what I have on that.

John C. Hendrix: Roster Iowa Volunteers, page 953, Twenty-fifth Infantry, Company "B" states that his residence was Mount Pleasant (Henry Iowa), nativity Georgia, age 22 (his wife was 17 and his baby was 10 months old). Enlisted Aug. 13, 1862. Mustered Sep. 27, 1862. His and Nancy's only child was born Oct. 21, 1861 in Iowa and was named Nancy Anne Hendrix. Civil War record states that he was 5' 6 1/2" tall, blue eyes dark hair and fair complexion. He was sick on a hospital boat D.A. January since 26 Apr 1863 and died on hospital boat Nashville may 2 1863 of Typhoid Fever in Milliken's Bend, LA. Milliken's Bend is located in Madison Parish and near the city of Tallulah. There is a historical marker there now. His captains Weer Smith and Ritner.59,78

John and his very young wife, Nancy Mathilda, were living in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa when he joined the Iowa Volunteers in August 1862. John Hendrix served in the 25th Regiment, Iowa Volunteers in the War Between the States.

In a letter to Nancy, his wife, dated February 27, 1863 he told her that he had been shot in the left hand and had lost his middle finger. His last letter to his wife was dated March 10, 1863. He was on the hospital boat “Nashville" when he died on May 2, 1863 from typhoid fever. The boat was in Milliken's Bend near the city of Tallulah, LA.

The service record for John Columbus Hendrix stated that he was five feet, six and one-half inches tall, and had blue eyes, dark hair, and fair complexion. John was the son of Abraham and Mary A Hendrix.47

Notes for Joseph (Spouse 4)
I just came across a printed (maybe photocopy of a newspaper article) of Susan J. Ryan's memoriam.

Interesting note in Clara Josephine Packard Kearns' handwriting on the obit

"Our Great Grandmother Matilda Troutman's mother.

This copy presented to John H. Kearns by Olen Gowens Jan 30, 1971 while visiting Olen & his mother Aunt Lou Troutman Gowens.  She was 87 Feb. 1, 1971."

On the back, Clara wrote "Susan J. Ryan was our great grandmother Troutman's mother.

Grandma Packard was Ida Haines - her mother was  Matilda Ryan.

Matilda divorced Rev. Haines and married Bob Troutman.

She had been married to a Mr. Howard also probably her first marriage."83
