A mass of Christian burial for Charles M. Besso was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 1997 at the Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 116 Broadway, Rock Spring. The Rev. Fred Wendel officiated. A scriptural rosary was celebrated at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 1997 at the Vase Funeral Chapel, 154 Elk St., Rock Springs. Interment was in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens north of Rock Springs.

Pallbearers were Pete Frullo, David Young, Ron Besso, Paul Besso, Justin Fessler and Blake Fessler.

Besso, 89, of 1020 Marchant St., Rock Springs, died at 9:47 a.m. Sunday, May 4, 1997 at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs where he had been a patient since April 29, 1997.

A lifelong resident of Sweetwater County, Besso had been in ill health for the past several years.

He was born May 21, 1907 in Rock Springs, the son of the late James and Madeline Katina Mattea Besso. Besso attended schools in Rock Springs and married the former Mary Jane Frullo in Winton on June 21, 1927. Their marriage was later blessed at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Rock Springs by Father Welsh. Mrs. Besso preceded him in death on June 16, 1989.

Besso worked as a coal miner for Union Pacific Coal Company in Winton and Stansbury for over 30 years until the mines closed. He then worked several odd jobs in Sweetwater County. Besso later went to work for Westvaco (later FMC Corporation) for 10 years until ill health forced his retirement.

He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, the United Mine Workers of America, the Italian American Benevolent Society and a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 151.

An avid outdoorsman, Besso hunted, fished and camped.

Survivors include two sons, Charles J. Besso of Thayne and James Kenneth Besso of Ogden, Utah; one daughter, Mary Kay Fredrick of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Besso was preceded in death by two sons who died in infancy and one brother, John (Spiro) Besso.

I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
