LOUIS MATHIEU DIDIER GUILLAUME (1816-1892) “Surrender of Lee to Grant” after the Battle of Appomattox Court House the morning April 9, 1865. In one of the last battles of the Civil War, Lee tried to break through Union forces only to be cut off by Union cavalry backed by two corps of federal infantry and had no choice but to surrender as escape proved impossible.
