“Found the original survey, alas it does NOT say anything about where John Cummins was from, but it did give me a look at where they error crept into the directions, and yes I was right to make the correction I did. It also shows the shape well with the river sketched in. This allowed me to locate where the land was in Whitley. Nice to know just where people where!
Also I note its not far from Meadow Creek, Whetstone Creek, and the Smith Cemetery. Added evidence that we have the right place.
Another interesting fact is that the Chain Carrier for this survey was WIlliam Johnson, being on hand in March of 1799. This is the earliest actual record I have found placing him for certain in (what would become) Whitley County. He was there the day Cummins staked out his land, supporting the idea they came to Whitley togethe[r].”
