Massimo (Max) Vezzetti
Massimo "Max" Vezzetti was born on August 25, 1864, in Agliè, Torino, in the Piedmont region of Italy. He was the son of Martino Vezzetti (1819–1898) and Antonia Maria Tappero (1828–1896). His early life in northern Italy was shared with several siblings, including Giuseppe (Joseph) "Doc" Vezzetti, Giovanni Vezzetti, Maria Maddalena Vezzetti, Peter (Pietro Carlo) Charles Vezzetti, and Rosa Marie Vezzetti. Two older twin sisters, Maddalena and Rosa, were born and died in infancy in 1854.
Max immigrated to the United States in the late 1880s, arriving around 1888 and settling in Fremont County, Colorado. By 1900, he was living in Brookside, near Canon City, and was employed as a bartender. Census records from that year note that he had become a naturalized citizen, could read and write English, and lived with a fellow Italian immigrant, Battista Scarvada.
On August 5, 1907, Max married Maria (Mary) Bordesone in Canon City, Colorado. Mary was born in 1876 and was also of Italian origin. The couple made their home in Brookside, where Max operated a saloon and became an active member of the Italian-American community. A child was born to them around 1902 but died in infancy and was buried in the old cemetery in Brookside. Their surviving child, Martin Joseph Vezzetti, was born in 1908.
Max was known as an industrious man and a respected resident of Brookside. In the 1910 census, he is recorded as a saloon keeper, working on his own account, and living with his wife and young son. By 1920, he was listed as an oil worker ("oil drier"), continuing to live in Brookside, owning his home free of mortgage. His ability to adapt from service to industry reflected the economic transitions of the time in Fremont County.
He participated in community and cultural events, especially within the Italian Federation of Fremont County. In September 1903, The Canon City Record reported his service as a master of ceremonies during a large celebration commemorating the 33rd anniversary of Italian troops entering Rome. The event brought together hundreds of participants from Italian lodges across Brookside, Rockvale, Coal Creek, and Pueblo.
Throughout his life, Max's name appeared in local news as both a businessman and active community member. In 1909, he and his brother Joe Vezzetti were seriously injured in a buggy accident while returning home from Colorado Springs. Both men suffered broken ribs and bruises but eventually recovered. In another instance, in 1910, Max was mentioned as a storekeeper in Florence during a local forgery case, when his quick report to authorities helped lead to an arrest.
By 1930, Max was widowed following the death of his wife Mary in 1923. He continued living in Brookside with his son Martin. That year's census shows him as a homeowner with property valued at $250. His 1940 census entry lists him at 333 Cedar Avenue in Brookside, still widowed and retired, living with his son Martin and daughter-in-law Angie Vezzetti. He had completed a fourth-grade education and continued to speak both Italian and English.
Massimo (Max) Vezzetti died in Canon City, Fremont County, Colorado, on January 26, 1944, at the age of 79. He was buried locally. His long life spanned from 19th-century Italy to mid-20th-century America, where he helped shape the early Italian community of Fremont County. He is remembered as a hardworking immigrant who built a life of stability, family, and civic engagement in southern Colorado.
