World War Veteran Killed.

John Griswould, who lived on the Saline river abut twelve miles southwest of Natoma, met almost instant death when the auto he was driving overturned near the Burd Doty place about five miles southwest of town last Friday. He was returning home from Natoma and was driving fast. Folks at the Doty home were eye witnesses of the tragedy. They saw Mr. Griswould coming down the road near the house, saw his car skid to the left side of the road into a small ditch which it followed for some distance without apparent slackening of speed. When nearly to a small culvert the unfortunate man pulled it back into the road at such a sharp angle that it crossed the road and struck the abutment of the cement culvert, threw its victim out into the road and turned over twice, landing some distance. The witnesses of the tragedy hurried to the spot, only to find the driver breathing his last.

Later investigation developed the fact that his neck was broken, his shoulder and ribs crushed and his skull crushed in at the temple. Death was practically instantaneous. The body was taken to his hold home at Ellis for burial. John Griswould was born June 6, 1890 in Ellis county and moved to a farm near Natoma about two years ago. At the time of his death he was 32 years old. He leaves a wife, three children, four brothers, four sisters, a mother and other relatives. He was a soldier in the World War and was wounded overseas, a shell striking his hand.

The funeral services were in charge of American Legion. The real cause of the accident will never be known. When later examined the radius rods of the car and the steering hear were found to be broken. Whether this happened before or during the trouble cannot be stated. – Natoma Independent.
