In an altercation with Leland Johnson over a pair of leggings before church, Leland shot Tom twice in the shoulder. Leland surrendered but appears to have not been charged.

Sam Rickett was supposed to have served 11 years in prison for the murder of Tom Baker. Despite getting 11 years for killing Tom Baker in 1939, Sam was out by 1945, living in Oldham County, Kentucky and had a draft card for WWII.
