Notes for James “Jim” HECKMAN
James (Jim) Heckman, age 67, and a resident of Clarendon and Donley for some 60 years, died suddenly at 12:40 P.M. Wednesday at his home here from a heart attack. He was an old time cowboy and rancher, but had been retired for several years.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Welthey J. Heckman (nee McCracken); one son, Lawrence Heckman of Clarendon; one sister, Mrs. Mary Cross of Silverton; five brothers, Will Heckman of Amarillo, Al and George Heckman of Clarendon, Dan Heckman of Happy and Henry Heckman of Silverton.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Murphy-Spicer-Buntin Funeral Chapel Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Murphy-Spicer-Buntin Funeral Home.

A follow-up article will appear next week in the Leader, giving a short sketch of Mr. Heckman's life history.

Funeral services for Jim Heckman, who died suddenly from a heart attack last Wednesday, were held Saturday afternoon at the Murphy-Spicer-Buntin Funeral Chapel with Rev. James McLeod officiating.

James (Jim) Heckman was born May 1, 1880 in Montague County, Texas. He and his family moved from Montague County to Clarendon in the fall of 1882, and lived on Spring Creek while his father, John Heckman, worked for the Goodnight and Adair ranch until the spring of 1883. They then moved down on Red River near Brice and Antelope Flat where he grew to manhood. He attended Heckman school and worked on the JA ranch, helping his father and other men put up hay and build fence. He later attended Goodnight College 1901-1902 and lived in the Goodnight home. He lived and worked on the JA ranch most of his life, retiring in 1919.

On May 21, 1911, Mr. Heckman was married to Miss Welthey Jane McCracken. To this union were born four children, but only a son, Lawrence Heckman, is now living.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Welthey Jane Heckman; a son, Lawrence Heckman of Clarendon; one sister, Mrs. Mary Cross of Silverton; five brothers, Will Heckman of Amarillo; Al and George Heckman of Clarendon; Dan Heckman of Happy and Henry Heckman of Silverton.

Attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Will Heckman, Mrs. Raymond Tyler, a niece, Mrs. Si Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McCracken, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie White, all of Amarillo; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heckman, Billie Faye Heckman, a niece, Mr. and Mrs. George Martin, a niece, all of Silverton; Mr. Dan Heckman, Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Helton, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Sexton, Mrs. Van Cope, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Bullock, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Mashburn, Mrs. Don Foster, all of Happy; William White of Fort Worth; Mr. John McCracken, Mr. John O. McCracken, both of Central Valley, Calif.; Mrs. George Shelton of Pampa; Mr. W.N. Bullock, Mr. Earl Bullock, Miss Emma Bullock, all of Antelope Flat.

Attending the casket were L.M. Putman, J.W. Garland, Joe Ritter, John Helton, W.M. Payne, Lesker Christie.

Funeral arrangements were under the directoin [sic] of the Murphy-Spicer-Buntin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jim Heckman,69, pioneer Clarendon resident, died at 1:10 Wednesday afternoon, April 10th, at Groom Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Heckman had been in poor health for six years and had been seriously ill for about one week.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Friday morning. The rites were at the Murphy Memorial Chapel, with Bill Williams of Happy officiating. She was a member of a nondenominational congregation.

Mrs. Heckman, nee Welthey Jane McCracken, was born September 10, 1893, in Decalb County, Alabama, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mark M. McCracken. She moved to Donley County in 1902 with her parents from Decalb County, Alabama. She and James Heckman were married in Donley County in 1911. Mr. Heckman worked for the JA Ranch about forty-five years.

Survivors are one son, Lawrence Heckman of Claude, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Kimbrell of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mrs. Kate Hudson of Skellytown, Texas; one brother, Charlie W. McCracken of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Edward Dishman, A.C. Carter, Leslie White, Bob Hudson, Cecil Heckman, and Loyd Hahn.

Interment was in the Citizens Cemetery beside her husband who died in 1947.
