Funeral was Saturday, May 27 at Forest Grove Memorial Chapel for George L. "Pappy" Burke, 79, of Cherry Grove, who died May 24 at his home unexpectedly. Rev. Ivan Marble of Gales Creek Community Church officiated and burial was in Forest View Cemetery.
He was born January 29, 1893 in Nebraska. He came to Oregon in 1902 living in Astoria and Rockaway for several years, later moving to Timber and then to Cherry Grove. He worked in the woods in the early years. He also worked in construction. He married Florence Morley on October 20, 1912 at Forest Grove and they had lived in Cherry Grove for 22 years.
Survivors include the widow of Cherry Grove; a son Wilbur A. Burke of Cherry Grove, daughters Bertha Beard of Bonnie Slop, Dorothy Harris of Beaverton, Goldie Wilson of Forest Grove, Nellie O'Dell of Cherry Grove, Geraldine Bishop of Portland and Eunice Garrigus of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister Alice Roynon of Springfield; 29 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. A son George Berke died earlier.
