PART IV
THE QUAKER PIONEERS
CHAPTER 1 HADLEY

In his book Notes On The Quaker Family of Hadley, published in 1916, Chalmers Hadley lays claim to illustrious ancestry back to a Sir John Hadley, Lord Mayor of London around 1345, and to the Somerset family of Hadley and further back to the Norman family of of de Haddesley. He also claims a female descent from the Audley family, with lines to Charlemagne. These claims may well be valid, but the fact remains that there is no record in Ireland that traces the American Quaker branch of"the Hadley family further back than Simon Hadley I , who was born in 1640 in County West Meath, Ireland. Irish Quaker records, which were researched for me, make reference to his marriage to Katherine Talbot, to the "disorderly Hadleys", and to Simons being disowned by the Society for marriage out of unity in his seventieth year. The genealogy of the American branch of the family that I have been able to verify if therefore all that I shall show herein:

SIMON HADLEY I, 1640, County West Meath, Ireland. Married Katherine Talbot, who died 1710 at Moate, County West Meath, Ireland. Died IV-20, 1700. Their children:

John Hadley, 1673, County West Meath, Ireland.
Simon Hadley II, 1676, County West Meath, Ireland.
Elizabeth Hadley, ca 1675. Married - - Miller.
Jane Hadley, ca 1675. Married - - Kiernan.685
