Notes for Garland “Gar” (Spouse 1)
Garland Hurt was the only child of Thurston and Sarah Elizabeth May Hurt. His mother died a few days after he was born, and he then went to live in the home of his grandfather, Thomas Patton May, on Johns Creek in Pike County, Kentucky. His father, Thurston D. Hurt, moved from Kentucky and settled in the West. Garland later owned a large farm where the original Lesley/Leslie family pioneers settled in 1789. A relative Harlan H. Hatcher later wrote a book called Patterns of Wolfpen, which is patterned after the Leslie story.

Garland was the great-grandson of Floyd County pioneers William Robert Lesley (about 1740-1802) and John May (1760-1813). He and Laura Belle Fraley, daughter of John W. and Jane Spears Fraley, were married by M.V. Bowles at the home of her father in Johnson County. Their children were Mabel L., Forrest Everette, Sarah M., Joseph, and Thurston.

Part of the Hurt farm is now a golf course.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
