CHILD, LORRAINE MITCHELL - age 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Shannondale Healthcare Center in Knoxville. Born July 11, 1925, in Brumley Gap, Virginia, Lorraine was the daughter of the late James W. and Lucy J. Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert M. Child; three sisters, Edith DeBusk, Shirley Tucker, and Violet Mackey; as well as by three brothers, J.W. Mitchell, Douglas Mitchell, and Gene Mitchell.
Lorraine was employed by the Knox County Court House for a number of years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville where she and her late husband, Bob, taught the Sunday school class for young adults. A former First Lady of Knoxville, Lorraine was also very active in Ossoli Circle where she served as president. Those who knew Lorraine knew how she and Bob loved to entertain family and friends. Her beautiful flowers and gardening skills were known to many.
Lorraine is survived by two brothers, Fred Mitchell and wife, Janice, of Decatur, Alabama, Charles Mitchell of Cocoa Beach, Florida; three sisters, Peggy Bianchi of Cocoa Beach, Florida, Nancy Fogleman and husband, Earl, of Abingdon, Virginia and Jane Cumbow and husband, Ronald, of Atkins, Virginia; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, in the chapel of Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel officiated by Reverend Dave Ward.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First Baptist Church of Knoxville, 510 W. Main Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 or to the University of Tennessee College of Law, 1505 W. Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996-1810. CHILD, ROBERT MASON age 83 of Knoxville, died peacefully Friday, February 4, 2011 at Mercy Residential Hospice, Halls.
Bob was a resident of Arbor Terrace where he lived with his wife, Lorraine. Having lived in Knoxville all of his life, Bob graduated from Knoxville High School in December 1946 and then attended the University of Tennessee where he graduated in 1950 with a law degree. Before engaging in the practice of law, Bob served in the United States Navy working with the medical corp until the end of World War II. Bob worked for two years for a title company before joining the family law firm of Child and Child where he worked with his father and brother. Following retirement of his father and the judicial election of his brother, Bob founded the law firm of Child and O'Connor where he practiced law with several lawyers including his nephew Charles Child. Bob retired in 1991. The retirement years brought much joy to Bob as he and Lorraine traveled, played golf and enjoyed gardening together. A lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Knoxville, Bob participated in an active role in the church's ministry enjoying his Sunday School class as well as the ministry he and Lorraine had for many years with college students; as well as an active participation in the Knoxville Lions Club.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Child and his brothers, George Child, Jr. and Jack Child.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Lorraine Mitchell Child, many nieces and nephew to whom he was a favorite uncle and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
A memorial service will be held 7:00 PM Monday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Dr. William D. Shiell and Reverend Dave Ward officiating. Family and friends will meet 11:30 AM Tuesday at East Tennessee Veterans' Cemetery for an interment service. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the University of Tennessee College of Law, 1505 W. Cumberland Ave., Knoxville, TN 37996-1810 or to First Baptist Church, Knoxville, 510 West Main Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Online condolences may be sent to www.rosemortuary.com.
