Willena Marie Borgquist Obituary
Willena “Billie” Marie Borgquist passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Hospital. Billie was born in Los Angeles, CA, on August 24, 1937, to Bill and Peg Hurt. She spent most of her school years in Central California, graduating from Santa Maria High School. She went on to graduate from John Hancock Junior College and California State Polytechnic College, San Luis Obispo, with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Her first career was as a loving stay-at-home mother. She later returned to college to earn a B.A. in Social Work from the University of West Florida. Her second career was as a teacher at Hutchison Beach Elementary School where she taught mostly 3rd grade for 22 years. Although she retired in 2002, she continued to substitute teach and volunteer at the school. She was active in many clubs and organizations over the years, often serving in leadership roles. In recent years, she was a member of the teaching sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, the Retired Educators Association, The Gulf Beach Garden Club, and Sit and Stitch, formerly the Embroiders Guild of America. As part of the Birthday Club, she loved celebrating every month with her teacher friends. She loved chocolate, Elvis, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Jazzercise, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, anything red, spending time with her family, a good nap, traveling, baking cookies, lunch and movies with “the Girls,” walking on the beach, going out to eat, working on her genealogy, playing Gin Rummy, and shopping. She was always up for a trip, it didn’t matter where. She was a voracious reader, always in the middle of a good murder mystery. She was not vain, but she never left the house without wearing earrings, a necklace, and lipstick. She was a loyal friend and enjoyed keeping in touch with the countless friends she gathered throughout her life. She was predeceased by her father, William “Bill” Henry Hurt, and her mother, Clara “Peg” Kimball Hurt. She is survived by her three daughters: Cathi Casto (Paul) of Panama City Beach, Cindi Goodson (Bart) of Tallahassee, and Christi Borgquist (Peter Brooks) of Fort Lauderdale; four grandchildren: John Casto, Kaylyn Campbell, Jordan Casto, and Brantley Goodson; two great grandchildren: Ella and Cayman Campbell; and her beloved cat, Charlie. Her family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Hospital who cared for her in her last days. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 11, 2022, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am and a service following at 10:00 am at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund, 6405 Bridgewater Way, Unit 102, Panama City Beach, FL 32407, or the Parkinson’s Foundation at
