Notes for William Matt JOHNSON
Wm. M. Johnson Passes Away

William Matt Johnson, a resident of the Fabyan district since 1921, passed away at the age of 81 at the Wainwright General Hospital on January 16th. Mr. Johnson was a native of Rockhold, Kentucky, where he was born on November 25th, 1886, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Johnson.

He moved to Kellogg at the age of 16years and worked in the mines there for some time before joining the U.S. Navy. He spent four years in the Navy and then returned to Kellogg and the mines. While there he met and married Miss Katherine Tietze on December 25th, 1912. Later the couple homesteaded at Youngstown and moved to Fabyan district in the spring of 1921. He farmed until 1947and then retired to Chilliwack. They lived in retirement for 18 years before returning to Wainwright and taking up residence in Battle River Lodge.

Despite the fact that Mr. Johnson's education was limited, he was a well educated man, and an avid reader. His interests were widespread and he could intelligently discuss many different topics. He was always interested i n community affairs. I n Chilliwack his favorite pastime was fishing.

He leaves to mourn his loss his loving wife, two daughters, Mrs. Doris Dixon, of Lethbridge, and Miss Martha Johnson, of Edmonton, and one son, Howard, of Fabyan. He is also survived by four grandsons, and two sisters in the U.S.A.

Funeral services were held at Grace United Church on Saturday, Jan. 20th, with Rev. Herbert Harke officiating. Mrs. Beatrice Harke rendered a solo "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Mrs. Myrtle Telford officiated at the organ. The hymns were "0 God Our Help in Ages Past" and "Unto the Hills Do I Look Up".

Interment was made in the Wainwright Municipal Cemetery.

F. E. McLeod and Co. had charge of funeral arrangements.

Pallbearers were: Seth Oldham, Wm. Whiteley, Glen Berg, Fred Brimacombe, Clifford Kennedy, Bert Williamson.
