Notes for Ruth SHAW
Daughter of Joseph and Ruth Derby Shaw. First married Joseph Snow (1734-1793), after his death about 1794, married the widower William Bates, Jr.(1736-1808). Wallace, in his History of Canaan, says Ruth is the widow of Micah Porter, but Micah's will indicates his wife is Mary (Stockbridge)"My well beloved wife, Mary Porter", who died after Ruth, in 1830. All vital records for Mary and Micah and their children indicate Mary was Micah's wife. Ruth is buried near Micah, so perhaps Wallace, reading their stones, assumed they were husband and wife? Ruth, in fact, is the stepmother of Micah and Mary's son Elias Porter's wife Sarah "Sally" Bates Porter. Additionally, Micah's daughter Betsey married Brackley Shaw, Ruth's distant Weymouth cousin.
