Son of Lewis Anderson Samples and Nancy Minerva Graham who married in 1862, Roane County.
Three of James' siblings died of diphtheria in 1875. The 1900 census indicates his parents had 6 children, 3 living.
James married Almeda 'Meda' A Foreman, March 31, 1887, by minister of Methodist Episcopal Church at the Oak Hill School.
Their daughter Maude Edra Samples born July 5, 1888, Odessa, married John B. Foster, born Sheffield, England, age 33, March 27, 1907, Clay County WV, info given by her father J. W. Samples of Braxton County WV.
Maude was also married to Howard Otis or Oliver O'Dell and at time of her death, married name was Griffith, Joe Griffith informant on her DC.
James Wesley Samples married Esther Bourn born Braxton County, age 35, Oct 16, 1909, at the bride's home near Rosedale.
E.D. Samples paid bond and was appointed Administrator for estate of J. W. Samples, deceased, Dec 31, 1917, Clay County WV.
