Notes for Mary Elizabeth PICKERING
Mary Pickering Johnson was the daughter of Benjamin P. Pickering and his wife Rebecca Ellis. The birthdate I have listed for her in this posting comes from Page 11 of the records of the Newhope Monthly Meeting (transcript accessed at the library in Greeneville, TN). She is listed in her father's will, dated 2 August 1806 in Greene County, TN, as inheriting $5, the same as her siblings received. Both her parents' families were Quakers. Mary was the wife of Benjamin R. Johnson and the mother of at least 12 children: James, Elizabeth, Barton, Joseph, Eda, Mary, Asa, Jonathan P., Benjamin Richardson, Ellis, Hannah, and William. (I have seen another son, Orre, listed in Dr. Lorand V. Johnson's book on the Johnson family, Colonial Friends of Virginia. However, no birth or death dates or marriage information are listed for him and and neither he nor any of his descendants are listed in Benjamin's probate packet, so he may have died young.

Notes for Benjamin Richard (Spouse 1)
Benjamin Johnson (my fifth-great grandfather) was the first Johnson of our line to come to the Missouri Ozarks, and he is the progenitor of all the many other Johnsons buried in Johns Chapel. Some sources give his birthplace as South Carolina, others as Tennessee. Benjamin was known as a great hunter, and achieved quite a reputation for sports of the chase in Tennessee. He came with his family to Greene County, Missouri, in 1841, and settled in Center Township, where he lived till his death in 1867. His forebears were Scots who counted among their ancestors King Robert the Bruce, St. Margaret, and William the Conqueror. However, the family's loyalty to the Scottish king led to declining fortunes. They emigrated to Virginia in 1696 and were affiliated with the Quaker faith. Benjamin Johnson married Mary E. Pickering in Greene County, TN, on April 18, 1808, and they had at least 12 children: James, Elizabeth, Barton, Joseph, Eda, Mary, Asa, Jonathan P., Benjamin Richardson, Ellis, Hannah, and William. (I have seen another son, Orre, listed in some trees but know nothing about him, and neither he nor any of his descendants are listed in Benjamin's probate packet
