THE FUNERAL OF MRS. NANCY COX

Story of Her Illness –The Obsequies Were Held on Sunday

(Special to the Republican-Register)

St. Augustine, Nov. 14—Nancy Cox was born near Troy, Fulton county, Ill. Nov. 9, 1832. She lived here and near St. Augustine, Ill. Until about 18 years of age when she united in marriage with Isaac Babbitt. Thirteen children were born to them, six of whom survive: Mrs. Sarah Mart, of Big Cabin, Okla., Mrs. Belle Babbitt, of St. Augustine, Mrs. Pauline Clements and L.A. Babbitt of Abingdon and D.M. and I.M. Babbitt of St. Augustine.

Early in the autumn, after being in feeble health for several months, J. R. Harrod and Miss Cox, her sister, accompanied her to the curative springs in Martinsville, Indiana. She returned in a few weeks but little benefited. Resting up for a while she concluded to make at least another trip and so visited her daughter, Mrs. Mart, in Oklahoma. Instead of restoring her wasting energies in this milder climate, she grew more feeble. Four or five days before her death she became much worse and when the wire was received here, Dave and Belle went at once, arriving several hours before her death, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mart, at Big Cabin, Okla., Nov. 10, 1910, aged 78 years, 1 day. The children arrived in St. Augustine on Saturday the 12th with the body which was taken at once to the well-known Babbitt home, 2 miles north of town. The funeral was conducted by J. W. Hiett at the Christian church on Sunday morning in the presence of the largest assembly met here for years. The body was laid to rest in the Babbitt cemetery. She was a woman of remarkable strength of character and depth of religious devotion. She was a charter member of this church, founded some 60 years ago, and though her life has had a large share of hardship in trial, care and toil, her faith never faltered. She has entered into her well earned rest.
