Death of Mrs. Sarah Sweany

The death of Mrs. Sarah E. Sweany, aged 81 years, occured Saturday morning, Oct. 19. Funeral services were held at the Boistfort church Sunday afternoon 2 o'clock with Rev. Levi Smith officiating. Burial was in the local cemetery beside Mr. Sweany, who died about three years ago. Mrs. Sweany, as Sarah E. Cox, married Gordon Sweany in 1882 and settled in the vicinity of Salkum, coming to Winlock in 1889. Surviving Mrs. Sweany, two sons in Winlock, Ray G. Sweany and A.E. Sweany, another son, C.H. Sweany of Curtis and a daughter, Mrs. W.L. Eddy of Brigham City, Utah. There are also 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sweany made her home with Ray G. Sweany for some time.

Sarah Emmaline Cox is the daughter of Andrew Cox and his first wife, Clarissa Crossers. She is 8th of 10 children born to the couple.

On 28 Mar 1867, 21-year-old Sarah married 25-year-old Civil War Veteran Gordon Hamilton Sweany, son of Hamilton Sweany and Mary Thompson. They had six children: Alfred Ernest, Lillian, Charles Hamilton, Eva Alice, Raymond Gordon and Leroy Lewis.

After the birth of their first child in 1868, Gordon and Sarah begin their westward move. By 22 Jun 1870, they are settled in Riley County, Kansas. They have their next 4 children in Kansas. They stay there at least through 1880. By 1882, 40-year-old Gordon and 36-year-old Sarah settle in Winlock, Lewis County, Washington and are later considered to be one of the oldest settlers of Winlock. They have their last child here in Washington.

Death of Gordon Sweany
Funeral of Winlock Pioneer Is Held Yesterday

Winlock, Oct. 28- Gordon Sweany, aged 84 years, one of Winlock's best known pioneers, died here Monday evening. He had lived in Lewis county 44 years, most of the time at Winlock, where he had been prominent in various ways.

Deceased was a Civil war veteran, having served in Company G. 76th Indiana volunteers and was a life long member of the Baptist Church. His widow, Sarah E. Sweany, whom he married 59 years ago; one daughter, Mrs. Eva Eddy of Brigham City, Utah; and three sons, E.A. Sweany of Benton City, C.H. of Curtis and Ray G. of Winlock, survive him. A military funeral was held under American Legion auspices at the Winlock Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. today, Reverand Pierce officiating. Burial was in charge of L.R. Cattermole in the Winlock Cemetery.
