Notes for Henry TURNER
Titled: Major Turner Revolutionary War

In "Some Turners of Virginia," the author says about Henry Turner:

In 1779 he furnished a substitute to the Militia. In that same year, he probably served as vestryman of Amherst church. In 1780, he served as a Lieutenant in the Militia. On 29 Sept. 1781, he furnished 305 lbs. of beef [Source: Pub. Service Claims. p. 12]. He was probably the Henry who took an oath as Ensign on 2 Dec. 1782. Family tradition tells that he was known and called "Major Turner."

In Impressed Property Claims For Persons In Amherst County During The Revolution: Also Some Interesting Excerpts From An Early Order Book of Amherst County, I found that, in addition to the 305 lbs of beef valued at 2-20-20, he also provided 54 1/2 lbs of bacon 23 Feb. 1781 Militia (2-0-9 ); 9 bu of corn, 60 sheaves of oats and 200 lbs of fodder 28 Feb., 1781 August militia (1-3-6) [page 490 in 'The Lost Order Book']. In the Order Book of 1784-1787 in the July court 1785, he provided 85 lbs of bacon (3-3-9) Amherst militia when guarding prisoners marching through this County; proved in court.

Listed beside John on the 1783 tax list, he had 6 in his family and 7 slaves.

In Amherst County Virginia In The Revolution 1773-1782 Including Extracts from the "Lost Order Book" by Leonora Higginbotham Sweeny on page 39, in the Court held December 2, 1782, Henry Turner qualified as Ensign on page 71.

On page 47 [ibid.] a Henry Turner is named as a revolutionary soldier in the chapter entitled, "Revolutionary Soldiers from Amherst County, Comprising then the Territory of the Present County of Nelson."

On page 173 [ibid.], there is the following entry: "Turner, Henry, - Pike Co., Mo., June 13, 1849, Rachel Turner, aged 89, widow of Henry Turner who furnished a substitute 1779 in Amherst Co., Va., Militia, and in 1780 served as Lt., applied. Their son, Stephen B. Turner, same place, June 7, 1852, applied for a pension for the heirs of his father who he thought was a Captain in the Revolution. His parents were married 1777 in Bedford Co., Va. Father d. in Amherst Oct. 23, 1829; mother d. Jan. 4, 1850. Rejected." Then follows the names and birthdates of his children from a Bible record.

In the Amherst County Census of 1785, Henry is shown as the head of a family consisting of 7 white souls, 1 dwelling and 1 other building.
