COX

Nathan Cox is thought to have been born in Rowan County, NC@1782 and later moved from Whitley County, KY to Jackson County, IN @ 1813.

He was married to Alcy Cummings in Whitley County, KY in 1802. Their children were born in Kentucky and Indiana, and were named as follows: Andrew, Keziah, Moore, James, Mary Johnson, Eleanor Love, George W., Eliza Marshall, Hugh A. and John C.
It is recorded that Nathan received a land title in 1825, and it is thought that he died on, or about Jan. 30,1842 in the 60th year of his life and is buried on Chestnut Ridge in Washington Township, Jackson County. in what was once called in the Cox Cemetery and now is known as the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, along with his wife, Alcy.

Hugh A, son of Nathan, was born@1824, and lived a short span of life into adulthood. On Feb. 13 , 1844, he married. Mary Keller, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Shuffler) Keller. One son, Isaac, was born to Hugh and Mary. But it was not meant to be, that Hugh help raise their son, because about August of 1845, he passed away leaving Mary to raise her young son. As many widows did at that time, Mary married a widower, William Sturgeon. The Sturgeon family lived in the southwest corner of Grassy Fork Township and were related to the Hutchinsons. That is where Isaac was raised. Mary (Keller) (Cox) Sturgeon died Dec. 22, 1919 and is buried in the Sturgeon Cemetery in Grassy Fork Township.

Isaac Cox was born Dec. 14, 1844, in Jackson County and was raised with half-brothers and sisters and step-brothers and sisters. He married Letitia Downing, March 11, 1869 in Jackson County. She was the daughter of Galatin Albert and Hannah (Hitchcock) Downing. Letitia was born April 13, 1844 in Washington County and died Sept. 19, 1891, in Jackson County. Isaac died Aug. 16,1915, in Jackson County. Both are buried in the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. They raised the following children: Oscar, Melenia, Albert, Mary (Wieneke), Eleanor (Matthew), Isadore (Hunter), Hannah (Fleenor) and Edwin.

Eleanor (Nellie) Irene Cox was born March 21. 1878 in Jackson County and died Oct. 19, 1956. She married Daily Webster Matthew Sept. 9, 1902, in Indianapolis, IN. Daily was born in Jennings County, IN on May 13,1878, and died in Portland, OR on March 15,1928. He is buried in the Riverview Cemetery, there. Daily served in Co. K, 22nd United States Infantry, Spanish American War. He was a carpenter by trade and belonged to the Masonic Lodge.

Their children were: Hubert Beryl, born July 7. 1903, in Indianapolis, and died in Little Rock, AR in 1963, and a daughter, Mary Lutisha (Gregory) born in Madoc, MT. She married Paul Byrn Gregory June 9. 1935 in Jackson County.
Eleanor (Nellie) Irene (Cox) Matthew was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. IN.

"A loving husband and father dear
A faithful friend lies buried here"

Willis Callaway Owens
Born August 2, 1811 - Indiana/Kentucky
Died September 5, 1866
Husband to Sarah M.
Born September 12, 1812 Kentucky/Virginia
Died August 13, 1873

Descended from Indiana Trader John of PA, proven via a genetic test of Willis' descendant Garry Owens. The Owens family were intimately associated with the westward expansion; from PA to Bracken County KY then crossing the river into Indiana Territory. Capt. David Owens was with George Rogers Clark when he descended the Ohio. His brother Capt. George Owens defended Fort Jefferson; and both served at Fort Nelson at what is now Louisville.

I currently believe that Willis is the grandson of John Owens and Sarah Jackson of Clark County, Indiana. This John Owens was a son of Captain David Owens. John Owens and Sarah Jackson had a son who married a Rachel Callway, daughter of Samuel Callaway. I believe that Willis Callaway Owens is their son. Genetic testing, via Ancestry.com has proven that Willis' descendants have Callaway DNA of the same line as Rachel's father Samuel Callaway of Clark County .

Stones for Willis Owens and Sarah M. Owens restored by Brad Manzenberger who was commissioned by Willis' g.g.g. grandson J. Loppnow.
