Robert Mathis Hurt, Sr. was the son of Earl Evans Hurt (18 Oct 1887 - 23 Jan 1971) and Isadora A. Bright Hurt 929 Jun 1891 - 14 Aug 1933). He grew up in Dallas, Texas where most of his family were well known Dallas lawyers.

As a young adult, he moved to Houston, Texas and began a successful career where he was a super salesman with a ready smile and a very likeable presonality. For many years he succeeded in magazines sales where he would usually hit a town with a small group of young men. The young men would canvans the area and go door to door selling magazines; one of the most popular at that time was "The Saturday Evening Post." Later, in Houston, Texas, he opened an appliance store with a large dislay of machines.

In 1940, he met and married Ruby Mabel Havard (22 Sep 1921 - 21 Nov 1996) daughter of Charles (Charley) Harris Havard (17 Oct 1875 - 05 Apr 1951) and Iva (Ivy) Jett (06 Jun 1878 - 16 Apr 1963).

The couple was blessed with six beautiful children: Guyneth Loring Hurt (07 Jul 1941)Austin, Mower County, MI; Robert Mathis Hurt, Jr.(29 May 1943)Houston, Harris County, TX; Darryl Havard Hurt (20 Jun 1944) Brenham, Washington County, TX; Norman Eugene Hurt (13 Mar 1948 - 19 Oct 2011) Harris County, TX; Claudia Kathleen Hurt (09 May 1951 - 02 Jul 2009) Harris County, TX; and Debra Ellen Hurt (03 Jan 1954) Harris County, TX.

In 1947, the couple moved into a new home at 6821 England Street in Houston, Texas, where they raised their children. The home was sold on January 2, 1984.

Bob left his family in 1954 and his home and moved to Illinois where he spent the remainder of his life. He changed his name to Edward Robert Evans, and on 11/12/1955 he married Muriel Buix in Cook County Illinois. It is believed that in the early 80's he divorced Muriel and married Harriet.

“I am bound to them though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story. I will remember them for I am the result of the very love, struggle, sacrifice and journey of thousands.”
