He was a prominent Dyersburg businessman and civic leader. When he came to Dyersburg, he was connected with the Baker-Watkins Supply Company and then entered business with John Atkins. They operated the Atkins-Hurt Men’s Clothing Store.
John Robert Hurt was a member of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen at the time of his death and he was a member of the City Board of Education. He was also chairman of the Dyer County Circuit Court Jury Commission. He served as Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church.
