Funeral services for Floyd Hurt, age 53, who passed away at his home at midnight Sunday were held at the home this afternoon and interment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. The officiating minister was the Rev. Edw. J. Caswell and Lee Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hurt had served as a city employee since moving here from Newbern, Tenn., 30 years ago. First, he was with the Fire Department and later with the Water and Light Department, holding the last position faithfully until ill health forced him to retire two years ago. The large gathering of friends who attended the services and the many beautiful floral offerings attested to Mr. Hurt's popularity and ability for making and holding friends, to whom he was always loyal.
Mr. Hurt was born in Newbern, Tenn., January 11, 1888, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of Camp 1247 Mississippi Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mattie Chaney Hurt, two daughters, Mrs. Nelle Holsomback and Miss Floyd Mae Hurt of this city; one sister, Mrs. Leroy Trainhum, of Memphis; four brothers, H. M., Joe, E. L., of Memphis, and W. L. Hurt, of Gulfport. Active pallbearers were B.Y. Buckley, Leon Treadway, Bob Farrell, Vernon Clark, Charles Crenshaw, Raymond White, Roy Stott, and E. L. Stuart. Members of the City Commission, Light and Water Commission, all City employees and friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. Through respect to the deceased, the Light and Water Office at the City Hall closed during the hours of the funeral services.
